When you tell your family, friends and coworkers that you’re planning to go back to school, this is probably the first question they ask: “What’s your major?”

Tough to answer when you’re still undecided.

Not deciding on a degree program can stall your plans. You’ll transfer more community college credits and graduate earlier by deciding on a major than if you’re still undecided.

Still have no clue on which degree program to pursue? Here are five ways to kick your undecided major to the curb.

Examine Your College Credits

Make a list of the college courses you have already taken. Do you notice a theme? What careers or degrees come to mind?

If you plan to attend a local college before transferring, make sure the classes you take transfer by visiting AZTransfer.com

Find Your Strengths

What are your talents? Your strengths? Your passions? Write down a list of your passions, hobbies, skills, life experiences and awards. Ask your family and friends for ideas. What careers correspond to your achievements?

Meet With Your Advisor

Discuss your degree options with both your local college advisor as well as your NAU advisor. They are trained to help you choose the right major and plan how to earn your degree. Your advisor can also suggest majors based on your previous college credits as well as your personal interests.

Explore Different Careers

Maybe you haven’t even heard of your ideal job. Check out these online sources for career options and career planning tips:

Consider a Broad Major

If you’re eager to get started on your degree, choose a major that broadly explores a variety of topics. Majors like business and liberal arts can be applied to many industries, making it more likely for you to find your niche. These majors are also great for preparing for numerous graduate programs.
