College Affordability Guide has published a guide on
competency-based education (CBE). The guide, titled “Competency-Based
Education: Why MOOCs and Independent Learning are Tomorrow’s Course Credits,”
was created with input from six CBE experts, including NAU’s own Cori Gordon.
The guide explains what CBE is, what its strengths are, and
how it will grow in the future. “The excitement surrounding competency-based
education is far from hype,” the guide says. “This is the real deal.”
CBE programs like NAU’s Personalized Learning, “[have] been
lauded as a solution to the skills gap and an ideal educational model for adult
learners, and [have] been recognized for incredible potential in
Cori Gordon, lead faculty for the Liberal Arts Personalized
Learning degree, says in the guide:
“The biggest challenge we have faced is showing colleagues
and oversight agencies that CBE is comparable in its rigor and effectiveness to
traditional educational models. We have understandably been asked to prove
ourselves, and we have done whatever necessary to demonstrate that our students
are getting a quality education.”
