Deciding to earn your degree is a big step. But then comes the next big decision: What degree should you earn?

Getting an A in each class shouldn’t be your only deciding factor. Whether you are undecided or certain about the degree you want to earn, there are still other considerations important to review before you claim your major. Answer these five questions honestly about what degree you should earn before you make the leap.

Question 1: Why Do I Want This Degree?

You know why your family or friends think this is a great degree, but why do you? What subjects do you look forward to exploring during this degree? What experiences does this degree provide that will set you up for success in your career?

Choose to earn a degree that naturally motivates you and keeps you fascinated.

Question 2: Do I Know Enough About This Degree?

What are the requirements for this degree? Some degrees sound great until you see what classes you need to take. Does this degree require more classes than other programs? Are you excited about the challenges of these requirements—or repulsed? Know what subjects you will study as well as what’s involved in the discipline so that you’re not disappointed semesters into the program.

Question 3: What Are The Career Opportunities For This Degree?

Do your research. Review open job descriptions for careers that you want to pursue. Is your degree of choice required for the position? Research online databases like the Bureau of Labor Statistics for career possibilities and salary ranges with this degree. Are you satisfied with your findings?

Question 4: Have I Talked To Someone Earning This Degree?

Get the inside scoop on what it’s like to earn this degree. Chat with a student taking classes in the degree program to know the pros and cons of earning this degree. Talk to a professor teaching classes in this degree program to see if the courses and objectives meet your career goals.

Question 5: Is This The Right Or Only Degree For My Career?

What are the goals of the degree? Do they match yours? What other degrees can lead to the same career path? Why are these degrees not the best choice? Schedule to meet with your NAU advisor so that you can discuss the answers to these questions and the next steps to pursuing this degree program.
